The New York State Society of Professional Engineers recently held their annual conference in Lake Placid, New York. Among the many distinguished speakers, award winners and guests was newly elected assemblyman (and NYSSPE member) Angelo Santabarbara, PE.
Angelo Santabarbara is a first generation Italian-American and a lifelong resident of Schenectady County, currently residing in the Town of Rotterdam. He and his wife are raising their two children there. He was elected to the Schenectady County Legislature in 2007, where he served as chairman of the Transportation Committee. Angelo was recently elected to the New York State Assembly to be the first assemblyman to represent the newly created 111th District, including Montgomery, Schenectady and Albany counties.
Assemblyman Santabarbara served as the keynote speaker at the NYSSPE Annual Conference and discussed the important role that engineers play in improving the state’s infrastructure.
He also spent time discussing the Good Samaritan legislation that is currently proposed, which would provide additional coverage to engineers when they are volunteering in response to natural disasters or other emergencies. Assemblyman Santabarbara is planning to co-sponsor the bill and was adamant about facilitating “people helping people,” which is exactly what this legislation will do.
It is great to see a licensed professional engineer in the Assembly and great to see that he is looking out for engineers as well as the safety, health and welfare of the citizens of New York. The NYSSPE looks forward to having Assemblyman Santabarbara visit more of our events to ensure that he understands the legislative concerns of our members and has the information he needs to help resolve them.
